pastured eggs
We have sold our Barred Rock laying hens to Crane Dance Farm and Lubbers Family Farm. We do not currently have eggs for sale. Check back for more information about when we will have them available again.
According to a 2007 study by Mother Earth News of 14 free ranging
flocks around the country, eggs from pastured chickens contain 2/3 more
vitamin A, 2 times more Omega-3 fatty acids, 3 times more vitamin E and
7 times more beta carotene than eggs from chickens raised in
confinement (where most eggs are laid).
You don't need a
study to tell you they just taste, look and feel better than eggs from
confined hens and you can feel better about eating them knowing that
the came from happy, organically-fed hens.
In industrial agriculture the words "free-range" and "cage free" don't mean much, as this New York Times interactive article explains. When we say our chickens are free-range- that is real. They are actually outside- on grass and able to wander and peck- like chickens are meant to do!
Even "organic" eggs are often produced in factory farm situations as this newly released independent report illustrates.
Following the criteria of the Cornucopia scorecard Half Moon Farm eggs would receive a score of 2,000 points (excellent). We are not certified organic as the other producers in this study are. However our feed is certified organic and all our practices meet and exceed organic certification standards.
